Wie erzählt man die Geschichte jener, die keine Geschichte haben? Wie wird sichtbar, wer ohne Repräsentation ist? Was sind Geschichte und Repräsentation jenseits patriarchaler Herrschaft?
"The Song of the Shirt" gräbt nach Spuren der Arbeit und Kämpfe von Näherinnen in englischen Sweatshops um 1840. Zugleich sucht er nach der Filmform für eine Frauengeschichte von unten. Er ist marxistisch-feministische Klassikerin, praktische Screen Theory, extravagantes Musical, eine Attacke auf ein Bürger*innentum, das Solidarität und Emanzipation durch Wohlfahrt und "Kultur" verraten hat.
Work, work, work, till the brain begins to swim.
Stitch, stitch, stitch—in poverty, hunger, and dirt,
And still with a voice of dolorous pitch, she sung the Song of the Shirt.
